Huizenga Q&A
Current place: Raleigh, NC
Topics of interest: Fine conversations, light in its infinite varieties, subversion as a faithful way of life, straddling boundaries and making connections, anything/anyone that flies, the night sky, good theology, reading charitably, authenticity. Also rabbits and flightless waterfowl.
The book/author that most impacted you as a child: Tie between The Chronicles of Narnia and The Right Stuff.
In your 20s: The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. To this day, each time I read it it changes my life.
In your 30s: Possibly The Nonviolent Atonement by J. Denny Weaver. What we believe directly affects how we treat other people, so if God is truly nonviolent, I think that's a huge inspiration for us to love each other better.
Recently: I find comfort and brilliance in Krista Tippett's diverse interviews (speakingoffaith.publicradio.org) and her writing: Speaking of Faith. In fiction, I recently enjoyed the smoldering compassion of Wendell Berry's Jayber Crow.
Most recent education: MDiv, 2006.
Activities: Talking with all sorts of people, preaching on occasion, listening to live music, photography, readin' and writin' (but not so much 'rithmetic), hiking and cycling, traveling, finding excellent coffeehouses, and -- during the brief periods when I find some spare cash -- going flying.
The most rewarding thing you've ever done: I hope it's still in my future. But some candidate experiences include: writing a masters thesis that turned cathartic as I grieved my father's death; flying a rented plane around the Big Island of Hawaii; pursuing a theological education; going on a 10-day contemplative retreat; caring for people who are in vulnerable states.
Addiction: Coffee. But I can stop. Really. Maybe next week.
Political affiliation: There's no politician liberal enough for Jesus. "Love your enemies." That's about as subversive as it gets.

Word of thanks from the editor: The cover photo on our home page has been loaned to us by Mr. Huizenga. It is titled "Machine Beauty" and is totally rad.
