rapid fire
by tommy hanle

photography is about moment and about paying attention. ‘rapid fire’ is both.

shot by photographer, amateur chef and gardener, tommy hanle, it invites the viewer to enter into the moment and linger.

it's also just cool to hear how the camera makes that sound, when you hold the shutter down. at least that's what tommy hanle thinks. he's 8.

the hospital
by charity hoffman

Traveling by chicken bus in San Pedro, Guatemala this spring, I met Lael Stander, an American medical student there to perform free surgeries on kids with cleft lips and cleft palates.  I arranged to meet with his Miles of Smiles team at the hospital in Quetzaltenango (commonly known as Xela) later that week to document their work.  These images were taken in the post-op room at Hospital General de Occidente.

Charity Hoffman is a perpetually traveling writer/photographer/sister/couchsurfer/friend based in New York City.

Photopiece

presented by Erin Dunigan

Founded in 2001 by photographer and filmmaker Leanna Creel, photopiece teaches teenagers basic photography techniques and encourages them to use those techniques in order to tell their stories visually.

Throughout the course students are given a roll of film to shoot based on particular themes such as “something that makes you sad or mad” or “a day in my life.” Rather than focus on technical aspects of photography the course encourages students to pay attention to the world around them, to what they might normally take for granted, and to develop a visual vocabulary with which to communicate their view of the world. Students use inexpensive plastic cameras (the surprisingly reliable Holga, used by amateurs and pros alike) which use a professional grade of film while allowing for a wide range of experimentation and creativity.

In 2006 freelance writer and photographer Erin Dunigan joined with Creel in teaching photopiece courses in downtown LA. Since that time Dunigan has taken photopiece international, teaching courses, in Guasmo Sur, Ecuador and La Mision, Mexico.

The culmination of each photopiece class is an exhibit of the students’ work. Students together with teachers, select their best work, which is then displayed as part of an official exhibit for their local community. The exhibit gives students the opportunity to talk about their work and also gives their family, friends and community an opportunity to take pride in the accomplishments of their students.
